Alvamar, a contraction of Bob Billings’ parents’ names, Alva and Margaretta, began as the first public golf course in Lawrence. Billings, one of Lawrence's most celebrated figures, was a visionary that not only brought Alvamar into existence, but changed and grew the city of Lawrence through his many and varied development ventures. Completed in 1968, the Jayhawk and Quail Creek nines were then known as Alvamar Hills Golf Course. Today, it's known as The Championship Course at Alvamar, which more befittingly describes its history. The Championship Course at Alvamar has hosted a number of significant championships over the years, including the Kansas Open, the USGA Women's Public Links Championship, the Big Eight & Big Twelve Championships, and numerous Kansas Golf Association and Midwest Section PGA Championships. Alvamar was the very first golf course in the world constructed with zoysia grass fairways, a feat that none thought was possible. This bold experiment by Mel Anderson, part owner and builder of the Alvamar Hills course, changed the landscape of golf throughout the Midwest. After substantial growth and popularity, construction on a second course began in 1970. This is now what is referred to as the Member’s Course, which was both designed and built by Mel Anderson. Alvamar is one of two thirty-six hole facilities in the state of Kansas.

The bentgrass fairways and greens – first to turn emerald in the spring, last to lose their lush beauty in the fall – are just the beginning. Sycamore Ridge is like two superb golf courses in one. The gently rolling, links-style front nine leads you to the steep, wooded hillsides, valleys and streams of the back nine.

The full experience challenges your skills even as it calms your spirit. It’s no wonder Golf Digest names Sycamore Ridge the number-one course in Kansas City year after year and Zagat has added the course to its list of the finest in the United States. Sycamore Ridge is golf at its very best.

Find out why so many golfers from throughout the Midwest play for the pleasure and come back for the challenge at Sycamore Ridge.

Orion Management Solutions is an entrepreneurial golf company, large enough to offer the same expertise and systems as a larger management company, yet small enough to be able to provide our clients with a much more hands-on approach and on-site presence.

Proposed Structure

The Business Plan will cover proposed fees, other revenue options, memberships, rental information, etc. A marketing plan will list goals for the season and a means of achieving those set goals. A breakdown of all marketing dollars will be listed so the owners have a comfort factor in knowing where the marketing emphasis will lie. A separate section will outline a proposal for future changes, pricing strategies and member incentives or programs. Other sections of the plan will include Course Maintenance, Food and Beverage, Golf Shop Merchandise, Survey of Competition, Operating Budget, Equipment Replacement Schedule and a Capital Improvement Schedule.

It is the goal of Orion for the owners to feel like they understand what is taking place at the course level before it happens.

The second step, which blends with the first, is to set an organizational chart of department managers and supervisory employees under those managers. A sound business has structure, and individuals have responsibility within that structure. It is the goal of Orion to set in place five departments: General and Administrative, Golf Shop, Food and Beverage, Course Maintenance and Outside Services. Those five major departments will have people who will oversee their success and be held accountable for their results. Weekly staff meetings will ensure that everyone is on the same page, working toward the same goals. All department managers will have a copy of the Business Plan and will be expected to follow it as a road map to success.
